Pia Bräysy was appointed as Head of Litigation & Regulatory practice group at DLA Piper Finland as of 1.1.2022. Please read below an interview with Pia on her almost 20 years’ journey from a temporary position to partner and practice head at a leading business law firm.

Pia is a genuinely home-grown talent at DLA Piper, and proud of it. She joined the firm practically straight from law school, only after having been trained at the bench and after a short period as a prosecutor and has not changed jobs after that. Now, looking back after almost 20 years at the firm, Pia states that DLA Piper has been a great environment to grow as a professional.

“I was originally hired to a temporary maternity leave substitute position. It was a dream job for me and I was committed to make a good impression and prove that I was a valuable asset to the firm who they would not want to let go after the agreed term. Right from the start, I was trusted to take responsibility in various clients’ assignments. One of my first assignments was a fairly large bankruptcy estate which was involved in several legal proceedings. There were all types of litigation, including extensive criminal proceedings and several commercial and insolvency related trials which I handled independently. One of the cases even advanced to the Supreme Court where I won the case – with my first ever petition for leave of appeal.”

And that was just the beginning. Pia’s dedication and outstanding performance have proven valuable for many corporate clients. During her career, Pia has acted as lead partner in, inter alia, one of the largest trials in the Finnish legal history, successfully representing Helsinki City Transport Authority in a dispute regarding termination of Helsinki area metro automation contracts.

The firm and the entire landscape of the legal profession has gone through many changes during the almost two decades Pia has worked at DLA Piper in Finland and its predecessors. “Many things have changed but some things remain the same. I hear repeatedly that young lawyers at the early stages of their career want to take on duties with responsibility and feel that they are trusted to get the job done which is exactly how I felt when I was starting my career. This is something I want to foster as the new Head of Litigation and Regulatory of DLA Piper in Finland”, Pia says.

“Another thing that has remained essentially the same is the core team of senior colleagues in our Litigation practice. I believe this to be quite unique in today’s workplace, and it balances the rapidly changing business environment we share with our clients. I feel very humbled and proud to take the lead of this experienced team. At the same time I am thankful for everything I have learned from my colleagues and clients during my years at the firm.“ Pia comments.
