DLA Piper advised the leading Nordic power-to-gas developer, Ren-Gas, on its long-term sales and purchase agreement with Nordic energy company Gasum. Gasum will purchase all of the e-methane produced by Ren-Gas at its Tampere plant from 2026 onwards and distribute it to its customers. Ren-Gas will develop, build, and operate the Tampere power-to-gas plant, which will produce e-methane using renewable electricity from Finnish wind power and biogenic carbon dioxide captured from existing power plants. The plant will initially produce approximately 160 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable e-methane per year starting in 2026.

”Ren-Gas has been actively building an e-methane value chain in Finland, and this agreement is a concrete milestone. We were very pleased with DLA Piper’s practical knowledge, also when it comes to technical and commercial issues concerning gas contracts, along with their understanding of evolving regulations for renewable gases and e-fuels. Their vast experience within the energy market and gas contracts and Tiia Ryhänen’s personal commitment and passion was key to this assignment”, says Tanja Blomqvist, General Counsel of Nordic Ren-Gas.

Toward decarbonizing transportation

Using intermittent renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen and further renewable e-methane is a feasible way to store energy and distribute it to sectors such as maritime and heavy road transportation. Here we already have an existing distribution network and market demand, and direct electrification may not be a realistic decarbonization solution. E-methane produced from green hydrogen in this way is fully renewable and will replace the use of fossil fuels in road transportation and maritime sector, as customers demand carbon-neutral logistics for products.

"DLA Piper Finland has invested in energy sector and regulatory knowledge to support our clients in their decarbonization goals. Finland has great opportunities to succeed in the green transition and its ambitious climate goals, but to achieve this, we definitely need pioneering companies like Ren-Gas, to take the necessary steps for this transition. I am very pleased that DLA Piper and I personally have been trusted by Ren-Gas team to contribute to this important contract milestone of their power-to-gas plant" commented Tiia Ryhänen, Counsel at DLA Piper Finland.

For DLA Piper, the renewable gas agreement negotiations were led by Counsel Tiia Ryhänen.
